3 men given life in jail for killing blood racket rival

THREE men were sentenced to life in prison and one man got eight years for stabbing a man to death in a fight over illegal blood donations, the Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People's Court ruled yesterday.

Prosecutors said the convicts and the victim were rivals in the illegal blood business. They often had conflicts while competing for donors.

On July 6, the victim, surnamed Yu, beat the girlfriend of the lead suspect, surnamed Feng, in front of a hospital where she was soliciting clients. Feng was angered and set up a meeting with Yu for the next day, the court heard.

Prosecutors said Feng bought two knives and enlisted three of his partners to go with him. The four met Yu and two other men in front of an undisclosed plaza and started a fist fight.

Yu was stabbed in his back and died of blood loss while his two men were slightly injured. Blood stained the sidewalk, a lamppost, shrubbery and the entrance to the plaza.

The convicts argued they didn't intend to kill Yu but the court said they should have known using knives could cause injuries and death.

Although the convicts were thought to also be involved in illegal blood donations, they were not charged with the crime due to lack of evidence.

Blood donations, which should be voluntary, have created a profitable black market because some neighborhoods and villages fail to fill their government-assigned quota. To meet the quota, some village officials conspire with illegal blood agents to hire out-of-village donors and get fake IDs for them.

Illegal blood agents also sell donation certificates, with which a patient could exchange an equivalent amount of blood from the blood bank. Some patients' families also ask illegal agents to hire people to donate blood in their names so that the patients can get blood legally from the blood bank.
