30% of online items including ones from Marks and Spencer and Jack & Jones fail quality control test

MORE than 30 percent of clothing, shoes and children’s furniture sold online, including items from Marks and Spencer and Jack & Jones, failed quality control tests conducted by the city’s market watchdog, officials said yesterday.
The tests were conducted ahead of this year’s Singles Day sale, which falls on Wednesday, and is a peak time for customer complaints.
A batch of suits sold by Marks and Spencer on its website failed because of misleading fiber content, while two batches of Jack & Jones jackets, sold on JD.com, were found to be substandard due to unmatched fiber content and excessive formaldehyde, the Shanghai Industrial and Commercial Administrative Bureau said.
The formaldehyde content was 65 percent higher than the permitted maximum under national standards, it said, adding that inhalation of the chemical can lead to respiratory disease.
In addition, a batch of trousers marked Forever 21 and sold on the store’s website came up short over their instructions for use.
A batch of men’s shoes from Satchi and sold on the Shanghai-based e-commerce site yhd.com and a batch of children’s furniture made by Shanghai Hengtong Wood Co Ltd and sold on Tmall.com, an online shopping site under Alibaba, also had problems, according to the bureau.
“Based on our inspection, we found that the substandard rate of online products is nearly 10 percent higher than the same model of products sold in normal stores,” said Liu Guangqin, an official with the bureau.
