4 arrested for 鈥榮kimming鈥 bank cards
FOUR men working as waiters in Shanghai restaurants have been arrested on charges of stealing bank card data, police said yesterday.
The suspects were detained after police said they found four bank card “skimming” devices in their homes, along with more than 200 pieces of stolen data in their computers.
The men used small skimmers to lift data from cards offered by customers to pay for meals, police said.
More than 2,300 criminal cases involving bank cards were solved last year, police said, and more than 40 million yuan (US$6.4 million) lost by victims of the scams was recovered.
In the incident reported yesterday, the alleged scammers, who were caught in February, hadn’t used the data they stole to rack up other charges.
Police declined to reveal which eateries were involved in the case, but said they were popular chain restaurants.
Police told Shanghai Daily they have sent details of the case to the authority that regulates the industry.
All of the suspects are natives of south China’s Guangdong Province who arrived in Shanghai in January, police said.
Police said the activities of the alleged scammers became known to them during a wider investigation into bank card fraud in the city. That was launched in response to complaints from the public of mysterious payments appearing on people’s bank statements.
