4 detained for hotelier’s kidnap
FOUR men were taken into custody yesterday for allegedly kidnapping the owner of a hotel in the Pudong New Area, police said.
The incident happened about half past midnight when two men armed with iron bars and wearing masks burst into the lobby of the unnamed hotel on Gu’en Road in Xinchang Town, police said.
The pair then began beating the 38-year-old owner, surnamed Liu and a native of neighboring Zhejiang Province, who had been working on reception, they said.
Liu, who suffered injuries to his head and arms during the attack, was then dragged out of the building, bundled into a car and driven to a “shack” in nearby Hangtou Town, police said.
Soon after Liu’s family had reported the incident to police, officers on patrol in Hangtou chanced upon the rundown property and became suspicious.
When they were refused access by two men, the officers called for backup and the alleged crime was discovered.
The four suspects are alleged to have said that they kidnapped Liu in order to get a 2 million yuan (US$320,000) ransom.
