4 swindlers get prison in theft of 20,800 yuan

FOUR men who stole 20,800 yuan (US$3,347) from the bank cards of three people in a money-drop swindle were sentenced to terms ranging from 10 months to four years in prison for theft yesterday by the Xuhui District People's Court.

The convicts, Li Liu, Zheng Linwen, Zheng Kangwen and Zheng Xuekui, were caught on October 26.

In one case, Li dropped a bag containing the fake notes and a bank card in front of a victim while riding a bicycle on Guijing Road on September 23. Zheng Kangwen picked up the bag and invited the victim to share the money.

After that, Li came back and asked to check both of their belongings. He also asked to identify the victim's bank card in that person's wallet and pretended to call telephone banking after the victim was convinced to input the password on his cellphone, the court heard.

Zheng Kangwen convinced the victim to put the bank card into the bag, and then gave the victim an identical bag that had been prepared with only newspapers and a fake card.
