5 held over fake beauty goods
FIVE people who sold counterfeit versions of a popular imported health product have been detained, Yangpu District police said yesterday.
Police discovered the illegal operation in an office building in Yangpu following a tipoff saying a group of people was producing fake versions of the nutrient solutions made by American company Cell Food, which are available only online on China’s mainland.
The counterfeit products were found to be made from citric acid and water.
The operation was headed by a man surnamed Li who was detained following a police raid on May 17, during which 1,700 counterfeit products were also seized.
Li told police he hired several people to sell the counterfeit products to health stores over the telephone and on the Internet. The goods cost just 10 yuan (US$1.60) per bottle to make but sold for 580 yuan, according to Liu.
