5 years for throwing newborn to death

A 19-year-old mother who threw her newborn baby from the 12th floor of a residential building to her death was sentenced to five years in jail for murder, Songjiang District People’s Procuratorate said yesterday.
The mother, Zhou Chunyan, got a lighter penalty as she was young and a first offender, the court said.
Zhou, a migrant from Anhui Province, concealed her pregnancy from her boyfriend as the baby was her ex-boyfriend’s, prosecutors said.
When she gave birth to the baby girl in a rest room on June 25, she decided to throw the infant out of the window.
Police found the baby’s naked body, still with the umbilical cord attached, on a fourth floor balcony. The baby died from traumatic shock as a result of a fall, medical examiners said.
Police found bloodstains in the building’s public rest room and a DNA test proved that Zhou was the mother.
“I regretted a lot. The baby was innocent.” Zhou repeated after being caught.
Zhou said she was about to get married to her boyfriend at that time. Her family and the boyfriend knew nothing about the baby she had with her ex-lover. When her boyfriend asked about her bulging underbelly, she said it was because she was getting fat or had gas in the stomach.
