50 expats get Magnolia awards

FIFTY people from 22 countries were yesterday presented with Magnolia Silver Awards in recognition of their contribution to the city’s development.

Among the recipients were Johan Jansen, chief executive of Coca-Cola Industries Management (Shanghai), Gordon Orr, chairman of McKinsey & Co Asia, Bivash Mukherjee, a foreign expert at Shanghai Daily, and Leonard Pratt, senior consultant in the news department of International Channel Shanghai.

“It’s a great honor to be here today as a recipient of the Magnolia award,” Pratt said on behalf of the winners.

“We’ve all had the pleasure of making good friends here, finding inspiring and rewarding work here and making pleasant and productive lives here,” he said.

“It’s a pleasure to be in Shanghai during its tremendous historical development. I know we all look forward to being with you for the further development to come,” he said.

Named after Shanghai’s official flower, the Magnolia awards were inaugurated by the city government in 1989. Silver, Gold and Honorary Citizenship gongs are presented annually to those expats deemed to have made an outstanding contribution to the city’s social and economic development.

Over the past 25 years, more than 959 people have received the awards, which can be useful when applying for residency or work permits in the city.

The Magnolia Silver Award certificates are signed and conferred by the director-general of the city’s foreign affairs office, while the Gold and Honorary Citizenship awards are signed and conferred by the mayor of Shanghai.
