6 drug traffickers given harsh punishment
SIX drug dealers involved in two separate cases were sentenced to life imprisonment and death with reprieve yesterday by the Shanghai Railway Transport Intermediate Court.
The drug seized in both cases was mainly methamphetamine, also known as "ice," judges said. The court was ordained by the Shanghai Higher People's Court to handle the cases.
In one case, Li Xiaoqin, a 35-year-old farmer from Sichuan Province, and Kang Jianliang, 30, a local unemployed, entrusted Cao Yongkuan, a man also from Sichuan Province, to transport drugs from Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan, for them.
Li transferred 62,000 yuan (US$9,351) to Cao's bank account in March. Cao bought 200 grams of "ice" with the money on March 5 and carried the drug to Li and Liao that night.
After Li and Liao sold the drug, they gave Cao 100,000 yuan in cash and asked him to buy drugs from Chengdu in the same way.
When Cao brought nearly 600 grams of "ice" to a foot massage parlor to meet Li on March 10, police caught him after receiving tips. Liao and Li were also caught later.
The trio was each given a life sentence for trafficking and trading drugs because they confessed voluntarily, the railway court said.
In another case, Xu Xiaochun and Lu Juhua, both 40-year-old unemployed Shanghai residents, were stopped by police when they drove a car on the Mid-Ring Road near Tianshan Road W. on the night of January 21. Police uncovered more than 1 kilogram of "ice," as well as a small number of other drugs, in their car.
They confessed to police that they were about to make a deal with a drug dealer, Wei Gonghua, who is still at large. Another man in the car, Wei Zucai, sent by Wei Gonghua to escort them, was also caught.
Xu and Lu began buying drugs from Wei Gonghua in January and just bought 200 grams of "ice" from him the day before, they admitted.
They were sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve while Wei Zucai was sentenced to life imprisonment.
