6 members of gambling gang held
SIX members of a gang that ran an underground gambling den targeting teenagers have been sentenced to criminal detention, Qingpu District police said yesterday.
The group, led by a man surnamed Huang, rigged card games to cheat about 500,000 yuan (US$81,600) out of their victims, most of whom were aged 16 to 18.
Most of the people swindled were students, police said, adding that they had been receiving reports from victims’ parents since August.
Huang lured the teens to his den with the offer of free bets and commissions, police said.
He also offered loans — with astronomical interest rates — to those who fell into debt. If a debtor failed to make a repayment, they or their family would be visited by Huang’s thugs, police said.
The gambling den was busted last month, they said.
