600 drivers netted for blocking intersections

MORE than 600 drivers have been fined by police in the past four months for blocking traffic at crossroads while cutting across and trying to force their way into another lane, police said yesterday.

Many offenders were caught by surveillance cameras installed at four crossroads in Putuo and Hongkou districts to crack down on spillback.

Drivers continue into an intersection during the green light countdown, even though the lane they are heading toward is already bumper to bumper.

When the lights change, they are still trying to force their way into the lane, their vehicles blocking traffic in the opposite direction.

According to traffic rules, drivers should not enter an intersection even with a green light if traffic is already congested across the intersection.

Within half an hour yesterday morning, five drivers were caught at Wuning Road and Lanxi Road in Putuo District, police said.

Each will be fine 200 yuan (US$32) and have two points deducted from their license.

Cameras were installed at Yiminhe Road and Zhongshan Road; Jinshajiang Road and Zhenguang Road; Zhennan Road and Fushui Road; and Guangxin Road and Zhongshan Road.
