86.2% foreign firms win copyright cases

About 86.2 percent of foreign companies won their lawsuits over infringement of their intellectual properties in Shanghai last year, according to an IPR white paper released by the Shanghai Higher People's Court today.

According to the paper, Shanghai courts accepted 174 copyright infringement cases involving parties from the United States, Britain, Germany, France and Japan last year.

The number was 16.3 percent lower than that in 2010.

Last year the courts settled 215 cases, 147 of them in first trial, and ruled on 65 cases with 56 in favor of foreign companies, the paper said.

The total number of foreign-related infringement cases in China also dropped 3.51 percent last year, while the number of cases involving Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan companies grew significantly by 128.42 percent.
