9 young students drown during summer

NINE young students had drowned during the summer vacation as of yesterday, the Shanghai Education Commission said.

The victims mostly were migrant children, the youngest a first-grader, and had gone swimming in ponds or rivers where it is more dangerous to swim.

Since the start of the year, 14 underage students have drowned, according to the Youth Protection Committee under the commission.

The number of drowned students in the city was 27 in 2011 and 24 in 2012.

On Saturday, a 16-year-old boy drowned while swimming in a river in suburban Jinshan District.

The boy, a native of southwestern Yunnan Province, went swimming with three other teenagers in Bainiu Pond of Fengjing Town.

He had slapped the water and cried out for help before he disappeared in the river, witnesses said.

Three other teenagers had tried to swim to the drowning boy but were unable to rescue him in the deep water. They reported his disappearance to police.

The boy's body was retrieved at about 5:30pm.

The pond covers more than 1,000 square meters and there are no facilities on the shore.
