A day to climb high to achieve prosperity

LOCALS took to ascending the city’s high-rise buildings yesterday morning in a custom to “climb high” on the first day of a new year in the hope of achieving a prosperous time ahead.
In northern Baoshan District, families from Songnan Town, a lucrative industrial center in the 1950s, climbed onto Watts Gallop International Plaza, the tallest building in northern downtown, to celebrate the new year. Several hundred adults and children climbed onto the plaza’s over 60-meter-tall twin towers.
Participants were invited to take part in games and quizzes about landmark attractions of the town on their way to the top of the building. The sites include the former buildings of the city’s earliest glassware plant, a motorcycle factory, an iron alloy plant, as well as a warehouse for China’s early exports. They have now been renovated into museums and creative parks.
“We’d like to invite more visitors to learn about the town’s history and cultural features, while encouraging locals to develop a healthier lifestyle,” said Jin Yan, an official with the township government.
In Pudong’s Lujiazui area, nearly 100 workers who start work at dawn every day, were invited to climb onto Shanghai Tower, the city’s tallest building.
The employees who work in civil aviation, medical, postal, sanitation, traffic and construction industries, watched the sunrise from the top floor of the 632-meter-tall building, the world’s second-tallest after the 828-meter Burj Khalifa in Dubai.
These workers have to get up before sunrise to support the orderly operation of the city, the management of the building said. The event enables them to send the first blessing of the year to their colleagues from the highest place in the city.
Such sunrise watching events will open to citizens in future, the management added.
