'A nightmare for us for months': residents complaint of Taian Table

A day after receiving a Michelin star, Taian Table, a western restaurant in Changning District, has been forced to shut down for operating without licenses.

A Shanghai Daily reporter visited the building, where the restaurant was in business, and talked with the residents there to get more of the incident.

Residents living in that building said they had had a clash with the restaurant and have been endeavoring to have it closed for a long time due to concerns of smoke, noise, and safety issues.

They blamed the business for producing "unbearable problems."

"The restaurant is a nightmare for us all for months," one of them said.

"The hot air and big noise produced by the restaurant's central air-conditioning without any soundproof measures make me unable to sleep, and I have to close several windows to get rid of all these annoying things, which had little effect," said Yu, who lives on the second floor of the building, adding that the restaurant's business lasted till midnight.

"And the restaurant also emits odor of cooking oil and smoke, which seriously pollutes the air," she said.

"Why Michelin ignores basic safety rules when selecting restaurants?" Yu asked.

Another resident, surnamed Guo, living on the third floor with two teenage daughters said safety and fire hazards are also her major concerns.

"We do want nothing but a quiet and safe living environment, and Michelin-starred restaurants should also obey the city's regulations," she said.
