Abandoned man accused of hacking wife to death

A man accused of killing his wife with two large knives in a wet market in Fengxian District stood trial for murder yesterday in Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People’s Court.

Prosecutors said the victim, Zhang Baozhen, 62, left her husband Niu Jizhou, 64, in 2012 to escape a prolonged period of severe domestic violence, and since then had settled down in Shanghai with her children.

Last March Niu tracked her down after he found their son’s student card showing he attended a middle school in Fengxian, prosecutors said.

Niu traveled from Henan Province to Shanghai on March 18. Two days later, he saw his wife near a church in Fengxian’s Situan Town, said prosecutors said. He followed her to a butcher’s shop, took a meat cleaver and a kitchen knife by his side, and hacked at her face and neck, the prosecutors said.

Niu fled the scene but was caught soon after. Zhang died despite emergency treatment. An autopsy showed she had several deep wounds on her face, and her neck and her thumb were almost severed, said prosecutors.

Niu admitted guilt. “I feel so sorry for my children,” he said at the court. But he denied he was a wife beater.

Prosecutors asked for the death penalty to be imposed. The court will announce its verdict later.
