Additional interview for UK visa
Chinese students hoping to study in the United Kingdom must undergo an additional interview under new visa rules introduced by the British Consulate in Shanghai.
The 10-minute interview will focus on students’ personal information, their motives for studying aboard and their overall qualities.
“The new section is only to ensure that the applicant really wants to study in the UK,” said an official with the consulate’s cultural and educational department.
She predicted that the new policy will have little impact on the success rate.
“The UK has always welcome extinguished students from across the world, including China, to come to study,” she added.
Some 57,000 Chinese students went to UK to study in 2012 — a 9 percent increase on 2011.
The rejection rate is around 4 percent — down from 14 percent in 2010, according to the consulate.
