Air defense sirens to be tested in city
AIR defense sirens will sound across Shanghai at noon on September 17 to test the city’s siren warning system and to let residents familiarize themselves with the rules concerning air defense sirens.
The day also marks the 16th National Defense Education Day, which falls on the third Saturday of September every year.
Shanghai Civil Defense Office said yesterday sirens will sound in three separate bursts denoting three phases of warnings, between 11:35am to 11:58am.
The first phase, sounding three times, each time for 36 seconds, will be an early warning from 11:35am to 11:38am.
The second phase, from 11:45am to 11:48am, will be for air raid alerts. The siren will sound for six seconds 15 times, with six-second pauses in between.
The third phase will be a single three-minute siren, telling people the alerts are lifted.
The city’s airports — Pudong and Hongqiao — are exempt from the drill.
The authority said elementary schools and high schools will hold the drill next Wednesday due to the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday taking place the day after. The schools’ drill is normally held a day before the citywide one.
