Aircraft firm boss suspended over ‘drunk-driving’

A CITY aircraft company boss and lawmaker has reportedly been suspended after being stopped by police on suspicion of drunk driving.
Sun Gang, general manager of Shanghai Aviation Industrial, a subsidiary of Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), was involved in an incident around midnight on Saturday, reported Xinhua news agency yesterday.
It is reported that the 46-year-old, who is also deputy Party secretary of Shanghai Aviation Industrial and a lawmaker for Minhang District, was questioned after his car hit a central reservation on Caoxi Road.
According to the report, Sun had a blood alcohol level of 2.57 milligrams/milliliter. The limit is 0.8mg/ml.
COMAC is reported to have suspended Sun and circulated a notice of criticism.
Police said that they are still investigating the case.
Other reports said that Sun has not yet been detained.
Under Chinese law, lawmakers cannot be detained or tried on criminal charges without approval from the appropriate People’s Congress’s executive or standing committee.
If a lawmaker is questioned in connection with an offence, his or her personal freedom can’t be restricted unless approved by the executive or standing committee.
This is to protect lawmakers from retaliation when they execute their duties such as criticizing or voting in the People’s Congress.
A source with Minhang District’s People’s Congress told news website thepaper.cn that the congress had been informed of the case but had not yet received any application from police to detain Sun.
Its standing committee would vote on the case once it received the application, he added.
