Clements Apartments on Fuxing Road gets makeover

AN apartment complex in Xuhui District that dates back to the 1920s is to be given a facelift to restore its former glory, local authorities said yesterday, though the project is unlikely to go down well with all of its residents.

The Clements Apartments development on Fuxing Road M. was built in 1929 and comprises five four-story blocks in a French architectural style. In 1994 it was added to the city government’s list of buildings of historical significance.

Over the years many of the residents have added makeshift extensions to their homes to provide additional living or workspace, said Zhai Weiqiang, a local neighborhood official.

“Many of the structures do not comply with the standards set by the fire safety department and are potential hazards,” he said.

No one will lose their homes as a result of the redevelopment, Zhai said, but the unauthorized extensions “have to go.”

Most of the 220 families living in the compound support the project, he said.

A man surnamed Li said he and his family have been living at Clements Apartments for 20 years and had built several extra rooms.

“At first, there were five of us living in a single room measuring 13.5 square meters,” the 49-year-old said.

“What else was I supposed to do?”

Another resident, surnamed Yang, said he had been told that the extension he built to provide a workshop for his violin repair business would have to go.

“A lot of the people living in the illegal structures have complaints, but I understand the reasoning,” Yang told Shanghai Daily.

“The removal of the extensions will improve the look of the compound, although it would have been nice if they had given me a bit more notice to sort out my things,” he said.

The demolition project is expected to be completed next month, Zhai said.
