Ape needs a mate
SHANGHAI Zoo is appealing to the organizers of a European endangered species program to help it find a partner for its six-year gorilla. Despite its best efforts, the zoo has been unable to find a suitable match for the ape, named Haibei, in China because of an age problem, official Bai Jiaming said. The zoo is now in talks with the European Endangered Species Program to see if it can help find a solution. Haibei was the first gorilla to be born in Shanghai, and the first in China since 1982. His name translates as “treasure of Shanghai,” and the pronunciation in Chinese sounds like “happy.” He was given his name following a nationwide public campaign.
