Arrest over stepfather’s killing

A MAN has been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of his 68-year-old stepfather, prosecutors in Jiading District said yesterday.

The unemployed 37-year-old, surnamed Zhang, had lived with his stepfather, surnamed Jiang, for 30 years.

But according to prosecutors, Zhang began to bear a grudge against Jiang in 2007, the year his only brother died.

They said Zhang believed his stepfather was unwilling to spend money on medical treatment for his sibling.

After Zhang’s mother died, he became dependent on his stepfather’s money, prosecutors said.

Several years ago, they were relocated by the government and Jiang was given was two apartments in Songjiang District, which he sold.

It is claimed that Zhang believed that his stepfather should have given him a flat, or part of the money earned from the sales, leading to a dispute.

On May 29, Zhang is said to have gone to Jiang’s home at midnight asking him to cancel the sale and give him a flat.

According to prosecutors, they pair fought and Zhang stabbed his stepfather two or three times in the throat.

Zhang claimed that he used the knife to defend himself, but never meant to kill his stepfather.

But prosecutors said there was no need to stab him repeatedly.
