A 31-year-old man has been arrested for stealing more than 30,000 yuan (US$4,350) in cash and valuable objects such as laptops and mobile phones from seven companies in suburban Pudong, police said yesterday.
The suspect, surnamed Liu, is alleged to have stolen a bank acceptance bill worth three million yuan but “forfeited it not knowing what it was,” and police said it was up to the prosecutors to decide whether the bill would be counted as an illegal gain.
Liu allegedly committed the burglaries in February and last month on Kangqiao Road E. In one case in late February, Liu is reported to have told police he had entered a former factory building from an open window, climbed up a pipe and then broke into the office.
Police said they had determined the identity of Liu after a friend of his was found selling a stolen phone for him last month.
Liu told Shanghai Daily that he had been earlier punished for robbing factories in suburban Qingpu District.
He said he stole from companies because usually at night-times, there were no people around.
