Baby-stealing woman sentenced
A WOMAN who stole a baby from a bath house was sentenced to one-and-a-half years in jail for abduction, the Minhang District People’s Court said yesterday.
The court said the 33-year-old woman, surnamed Wang, was given a lighter sentence because she surrendered to the police and never abused or tried to profit from the child by selling him.
Prosecutors said Wang was told by doctors in early 2007 that she would not be able to have a child after having an abortion. She went into depression after that.
Late in February the same year, she met a woman, surnamed Zhao, with her new-born child and started chatting with her. They kept in touch with each other after that. Then one day Zhao decided to go to a bath house and Wang offered to look after the boy.
Wang walked away with the baby boy and immediately left for her hometown in Anhui Province. She returned to the city a week later with the boy and claimed she had given birth in her hometown.
Zhao filed a report with the police but also kept looking around for her baby in Minhang District every day.
Her efforts paid off when, a month later, she noticed a baby that she suspected could be hers. She immediately told her husband about it. Soon, she spotted Wang, who ran away on seeing her but left the child behind.
After a paternity test, Zhao was reunited with her child. Wang remained in hiding for seven years but in September last year she surrendered to the police.
