Foreign bag thief jailed for 54 months

A FOREIGN woman has been sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison for stealing a handbag containing more than 140,000 yuan (US$22,350) worth of valuables, Jing’an District People’s Court said yesterday.
The thief, whose name and nationality were not revealed, stole the bag from a woman surnamed Wan on October 4 as they were leaving a bar via a packed elevator about 2:40am, the court heard.
The bag contained 1,500 yuan in cash, a Bulgari diamond ring valued at 140,000 yuan and some bank cards.
The thief was caught after police reviewed footage from the bar’s surveillance cameras. The cash and ring were found in her possession, though she said she had thrown the bag and other items into a bin.
