Bank van guard held for ATM theft

A GUARD who escorts armored vans has been detained in connection with the theft of 400,000 yuan (US$64,516) from a bank ATM machine in the Pudong New Area.

The suspect, a 28-year-old surnamed Shen, works for Shanghai Tianlu Security and Escort Co. He is alleged to have broken into an Industrial and Commercial Bank of China ATM on Qingtong Road at 4:20pm on Wednesday. According to a nearby security guard, the thief had his face covered and damaged surveillance equipment before managing to remove 400,000 yuan from the machine. Shen was held on Wednesday and admitted robbing the ATM to pay back gambling debts, police said yesterday.
