Bed linen products found to be substandard

MORE than a quarter of 90 batches of bed linen — sheets, quilt covers, pillowcases and quilts — checked by the city’s market watchdog have failed quality tests.

The products failed for containing excessive carcinogenic substances, shrinkage rates after washing, pH index, poor color fastness and fiber content, Shanghai Industrial and Commercial Administrative Bureau officials said. The products comprised 46 brands, and 24 batches failed tests.

A batch of pillowcases produced by Shanghai Ouhuang Textile Co Ltd was found to contain 79 milligrams of diaminotoluene per kilogram, compared with a limit of 20 milligrams per kilogram ruled by China’s national standard. The dye is harmful to health and could lead to cancer, the bureau warned.

A further 16 batches of bed products failed for shrinkage rates after washing.

A batch of quilts made by Shanghai Huazhuang Textile Co Ltd and sold by the Waigaoqiao outlet of Shanghai Century Mart, was found to have a 9.2 percent of shrinkage rate, compared with the national standard of 5 percent.

Hengyuanxiang, a wool producer and supplier based in Shanghai, had one batch of quilt covers failed for a bigger shrinkage rate than the national standard. Four batches had a higher pH index than allowed. They included a batch of bed product packages made by Nantong Diexiu Textile Co Ltd.

The bureau warned that textiles with a high pH index could lead to skin allergies.

In addition, eight batches had poor color fastness, and seven had fiber content that did not match what their tags stated.

The bureau has asked the businesses involved to remove substandard products from their shelves immediately and to scrutinize their stocks.

They should also refund buyers who have bought substandard products.

Investigation was still under way, bureau officials said.
