Biodiesel bus scheme a success
A YEARLONG pilot scheme involving more than 100 city buses running on a mixture of diesel fuels has been deemed a success.
“We are planning to use the new biodiesel to power more buses this year,” said Zheng Shusong, deputy secretary-general of the Shanghai Food Safety Commission, which coordinated the project.
In the scheme, 104 buses were fueled with a combination of regular diesel and biodiesel.
As of the end of last year, they had covered more than 2.3 million kilometers, Zheng said, adding that the scheme will be expanded to 1,000 buses this year.
One of the benefits of the hybrid fuel is that while it is just as energy efficient as regular diesel, its PM2.5 emissions are slightly lower, he said.
Another advantage is that it provides an additional use for waste cooking oil, Zheng said.
“Using swill oil to fuel buses can help in the battle against the illegal collection and use of the waste product,” the official said.
