Biodiesel gaining popularity
BIODIESEL continues to make inroads in the city as a new, clean energy fuel, with more than 100 delivery trucks to join the 1,000 public buses already on the road using the fuel.
Shanghai Bashi Logistics Company said yesterday 102 of its trucks delivering for IKEA will start using B5 and B10 hybrid fuel mixed with regular fuel — with biodiesel counting for 5-10 percent.
It will be gradually rolled out to more of the company’s fleet, including its sanitation vehicles working in Fengxian District.
Biodiesel is made from animal fat or vegetable oil — such as from kitchen waste. It is slightly less efficient than standard fuel but produces about one-third the level of pollutants such as carbon dioxide.
