Blind kids given map of subway in Braille

SIXTY blind children have been given Braille maps of Metro Line 10, which serves the city’s only school for youngsters with impaired sight.

The Shanghai School for the Blind is located close to the line’s Shuicheng Road station. Its pupils are aged 4 to 18, and about 60 percent of them are day pupils.

The map, which also includes information about local bus services and the layout of some stations, was produced by subway operator Shanghai Shentong Metro Gorup and is the first of its kind in China.

Copies are also available from the service counters at Shuicheng Road, a subway official told Shanghai Daily.

Hu Jin, a teacher at the school, said some pupils “like to travel by themselves.”

“The children can’t read maps and have to rely on spoken instructions, but that makes it difficult for them to get around,” he said.

Hu said that one of the blind kids in his class “was happy that he could use the map to get to Xintiandi.”
