Blood donors join queue for Expo cause

THE city would have a three-level emergency donor team on standby to provide urgent blood donations and support during the 2010 World Expo, officials from the Shanghai Blood Administration Office said yesterday.

The team consists of 2,010 key donors, about 2,000 backup donors and local soldiers and university students.

Authorities are recruiting backup donors from now to the end of this year, while the key donor team was set up on May 1.

Any healthy people aged between 18 and 55 who want to be a donor can contact district-based blood-donation offices. Those who have donated blood before and are able to respond to emergency calls quickly during the event are preferred.

"Expatriates who want to be Expo blood donors can send e-mails to sbao@shblood.org.cn," said Lu Yi, an official from the Shanghai Blood Administration Office. "A bilingual hotline will be launched soon."

The office will oversee drills in all city districts and Chongming County to rectify a Type A and O blood shortage and prepare for Expo.
