Bring ID if you want to buy fireworks

REVELLERS will need to bring identification with them to the fireworks shop if they want to celebrate the holiday with a bang this year, and they may find it a bit harder to find a place that sells them.

Shanghai’s fire department said residents will be required to register their identity when purchasing fireworks in the city, adding that the number of shops licensed to sell them has been reduced from 698 to 84.

“Our sales reached about 3 million (US$ 456,073) in previous years, while this year the number is expected to be less than 1 million yuan,” Su Lixin, who works at a licensed fireworks shop in suburban Jiading District, told Shanghai Television Station.

According to the authority, each licensed shop must be staffed by workers who have had fire safety training.

Licensed sellers are required to register the purchaser’s identity and the quantity and type of fireworks purchased.

“Residents will have to carry their identity card when purchasing fireworks in Shanghai,” an officer with the fire department, surnamed Zhang, told Shanghai Daily.

This year, residents will be able to scan the QR code on fireworks packages to ensure the products they are buying are not fake.

From the beginning of this year, fireworks are banned within the city’s Outer Ring Road.

Fire department officials are encouraging residents in the downtown area to take any unused fireworks they have in their homes to one of Shanghai’s 164 “recycling centers.”
