Bulgarians held in fraud case

TWO Bulgarian men have been detained on suspicion of withdrawing 167,000 yuan (US$26,000) from ATM machines in Shanghai using “skimmed” bank cards.

Footage from surveillance cameras at three different banks showed the pair, dressed in hooded tops and wearing respirators, withdrawing large amounts of cash using the counterfeit cards, Shanghai TV reported yesterday.

Police were quoted as saying that the suspects were identified taking money from three banks on separate occasions, starting October 31.

The men were traced to a hotel near Zhejiang Road, where they were detained on Monday night. Police said they found about 167,000 yuan in US dollars and Chinese yuan in their possession.

Most of the fake cards were issued in the name of foreigners who police believe to be living abroad, they said.
