Burglar bit victim, then fell into river
A BURGLAR sunk his teeth into a homeowner who had chased and fought him, then exhausted by the tussle, fell into a river, Qingpu District police said yesterday.
The 20-year-old, surnamed Liu, targeted a house with an open window and the lights off while wandering near a health center in Qingpu District at about 8pm on October 13.
But after being disturbed by the homeowner shortly after breaking in, he took some coins from a table and fled
The owner, surnamed Zhang, pursued the burglar, grabbing his belt.
Liu struggled with Zhang and threatened to hit him with bricks, said police.
As they fought, the pair approached a river. At the bank, Liu bit Zhang’s arm, causing Zhang to release him. But Liu was so drained from the fight that he tumbled into the water.
Unable to swim, Liu was quickly apprehended by nearby residents and police.
Police found that Liu’s haul amounted to just 10.5 yuan (US$1.72).
“I shouldn’t have done it, I was momentarily overcome by greed,” Liu said after being caught.
Liu was detained as he had committed a violent assault, police said.
