Bus drivers face lane-change fine

MOTORISTS who illegally use bus-only lanes are guilty of a traffic offence, but bus drivers who switch into regular lanes have traditionally not been held accountable.
That, however, is changing. For the past few months, the Pudong Public Transportation Co has been fining its bus drivers in an effort to make them “stick to their own lanes.”
“We hope it will help improve traffic order in the city,” said Pan Hua, vice manager of the company’s operations department.
The bus drivers, who work for the company’s four subsidiaries, were fined 50 to 600 yuan (US$8-90) each for violating the rule, he said.
Yesterday morning at the intersection of Pujian Road and Dongxiu Road in the Huamu area, about 10 No. 140 buses were seen using regular lanes between 8:30am and 10am.
“Some drivers use other lanes to cut ahead of fellow drivers,” said an inspector surnamed Tang, who said it was the most frequently broken rule.
Apart from being hit with a company fine, the drivers are shamed at work.
Pan said drivers who break the rule are required to write a letter of apology, which is posted on the company’s bulletin boards “to educate others.”
Other “bad driving habits” that are common among bus drivers include illegally honking their horns, according to Pan.
The company said in the first six months of 2016, the number of traffic offenses and rule-breaking incidents involving its drivers was down 17 percent from the same period last year, and the number of accidents fell by 10 percent.
“In general, our drivers are more aware of the laws and rules, as we’re stepping up both regular and extra inspections, and monitoring the in-bus surveillance cameras,” Pan said.
