Bus driver’s hunch proves right
A BUS driver has told how he chased and caught a thief he suspected had stolen a cellphone from a passenger.
Hu Weixing, driver of a 778 bus, told Shanghai Television yesterday that he had noticed a middle-aged man acting oddly on boarding the bus after a female student at 7:30am on Friday.
“I became suspicious of him immediately, as he looked very different from other passengers,” Hu told STV.
Hu saw the man staring at the woman’s backpack, and tried to warn her through eye contact.
When the bus reached a stop near the Dongjiao Hotel, at Jinke Rd, Hu asked if anyone wanted to get off.
“If the thief had got his target, he would definitely get off there. Normally no one gets off at this stop as there are no houses or shops,” he said.
As Hu expected, the man got off.
Hu then asked the student if she’d lost her cellphone. She checked her backpack and found the phone missing.
The driver then leapt from the bus, ran 100 meters and caught the thief.
