Cabbie punished for overcharging visitors

A Shanghai taxi driver was revoked of his license after he made a detour when taking two out-of-town passengers and gave them an invoice without his company name, the city's taxi watchdog said.

The cabbie, surnamed Cai, is forbidden to drive a taxi in the next five years, officials said.

Cai picked up two visitors from Beijing at the city's Hongqiao International Airport on October 28. After they arrived at the destination in suburban Qingpu District, the passengers were billed 335 yuan (US$50) in total and received an invoice lacking the taxi number and company name.

After receiving a tip-off, Shanghai law enforcement authority began to investigate the case and nabbed the taxi driver.

Cai confessed that he made a detour of about 40 kilometers and overcharged the toll fare along the road.
Cai said he tore out part of the invoice as he was afraid the two customers would complain to his company or traffic authorities.

The officials said the correct route for the trip would cost only 175 yuan.
