Cabby punched in face praised for recovering missing cell phone
A SHANGHAI cabby, punched in the face when he was trying to get back the missing mobile phone of a passenger from two young men, has been widely praised for his bravery, Shanghai Morning Post reported today.
Zhao Hongcai, 56, was in the People’s Liberation Army before he became a driver. He started his career as a taxi driver 12 years ago and is now working for the Shanghai Jinjiang Taxi Company.
Zhao’s act was first reported by Tang Jieyun on Weibo several days ago. Tang said her relatives, a family of three, were in a taxi heading for her home for dinner on October 2, but the wife found her new mobile phone was missing after they got out of the car several minutes later.
The husband had made at least 11 calls to the phone and no one picked up. Unexpectedly, Zhao called them and sent the mobile phone to them.
“My relatives had thought there was little chance to get it back. They never expected that the driver would return it, and even was injured for his trouble. We didn’t express out appreciation at that time and thus we wanted to say many thanks on Weibo,” Tang wrote.
Zhao told the newspaper that two young men got into his cab after the family of three got out. The two men sat in the back seat and one was them “bent and picked something up,” as Zhao saw from the rear-view mirror.
Though the phone rang many times, they did not answer the call. Zhao said it seemed like they didn’t know how to use the phone and asked them whether it was theirs, but they scolded the driver.
Zhao still was suspicious and parked the car on the roadside. All of them got out. When he told them to give him the number of the mobile phone so he could dial it to identify their ownership, one of them suddenly hit him with his fist, causing him to bleed around the mouth.
As passers-by were gathering, they fled the scene, the newspaper reported.
“It was just a little thing and it is just my job,” Zhao said.
