Calls to save ‘skyscraper’ slated to become hotel
USERS of social media have expressed annoyance at a plan to convert the East China Power Tower in downtown Shanghai into a hotel.
Built in 1988 at 201 Nanjing Road E. close to the Bund, the 100-meter-high former home of State Grid Shanghai was one of the city’s first skyscrapers. Soon, however, it will become a 150-room Marriot “Edition” hotel, developer Luneng Estate said.
Lu Di, an associate professor of architecture at Tongji University, said on his Weibo microblog: “The building symbolizes the high achievement of modern architecture in Shanghai and is one of just a few outstanding buildings created in the 1980s.”
On the architecture forum gaoloumi.com, people have appealed for the building to be preserved. “This landmark shouldn’t be lost,” said a man surnamed Wu.
