Cameras catch errant drivers

NEARLY 600 offending motorists have been caught by traffic police cameras since March last year.

There are at least 2,000 high-definition traffic cameras in the city, connected to software that reveals whether drivers have revoked or suspended licenses.

These cameras capture the facial features of drivers, which police can then use to match the profile pictures kept by them.

A total of 571 offending drivers have been caught on the cameras around the city and have been punished for driving on revoked or suspended licenses, police said yesterday.

As well as stopping offenders at Shanghai’s 29 border entrances, since February police have also been tracking them down within the city and then detaining them.

Of the 571 found to be driving with no proper license, 531 had full 12 demerits on their licenses — meaning that they automatically became void — and 40 others have had their licenses revoked or suspended for reasons such as taking drugs or drunk driving, according to police.

Traffic police have withheld the licenses of those driving despite having 12 demerits until the offenders passed a written test allowing them to recover their licenses. Drivers using revoked or suspended licenses faced fines of up to 2,000 yuan (US$290) or being detained for up to 15 days.

Officers from the tech team at Shanghai traffic police that developed the software told Shanghai Daily that the camera system wasn’t foolproof. For example, a twin brother or sister of a suspect might have been driving, or motorists wearing sunglasses or having the vehicle’s sun visor pulled down can’t be captured by cameras.

Police said they are also looking out for drivers with at least five traffic offenses that haven’t been unsettled within 15 days since March 25, the day the city’s new traffic law took effect.
