Cameras help cops catch bad drivers

POLICE in Qingpu District said yesterday that they issued penalties to more than 100 motorists for driving on expressway hard shoulders in the week through Monday, thanks to a new type of potable surveillance camera.

“In a normal week we would perhaps spot only four of five such offenses, but the new gadgets give us a big advantage,” said Zhang Qingfeng, vice captain of the district’s expressway police force.

“We expect to see a significant increase in the number of tickets issued as we install more cameras,” he said, adding that he hopes the cameras will serve as a deterrent to would-be offenders.

Hard shoulders should be used only in emergency situations, but motorists frequently use them for overtaking when the roads are busy, Zhang said.

Since the launch last month of a crackdown on abuse of the emergency lanes, 455 motorists have been punished, he said.

Drivers are fined between 20 (US$3.20) and 200 yuan for each offense and have penalty points taken off their licenses.
