Cameras to spot drivers on phone
TRAFFIC surveillance cameras are being used citywide to catch drivers using mobile phones while driving.
Violators face a 200-yuan (US$30) fine and will lose two license points, Shanghai traffic police said yesterday.
About 70 high-definition surveillance cameras to catch offenders are located at Chenhai Highway and Huqingping Highway.
“In the past, violators were mainly caught by traffic officers at the spot. Now the use of surveillance cameras will significantly improve efficiency,” said Xia Liang, a police officer.
The aim is to intensify crackdown on people holding phones while driving. Police will examine the pictures captured by the cameras as proof of punishment.
Dialing and answering phones with bluetooth devices will not be punished. Only drivers holding phones in hands will be targeted.
