Cancer popcorn buckets seized
WATCHDOGS have seized 80,000 popcorn buckets in Qingpu District that contain illegal brightening chemicals, officials said yesterday.
The words "Nextage Film Art Center," and "UME" are printed on the buckets, reported Xinmin Evening News.
Local industrial and commercial authorities are still investigating where the buckets were to be sent.
The Shanghai Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision Qingpu District branch discovered the buckets in a warehouse on Fangnan Road belonging to the Mai'erle Paper Products Co Ltd.
Officials tested several buckets and found all contained fluorescent brightener which whitens paper and is banned in food packaging because it can lead to cancer.
The director of the company, surnamed Chen, said they were only responsible for processing the buckets. The raw material came from Jinfengyuan paper plant in Fengxian District, said Chen.
He also said that adding chemicals to paper used in making the buckets is a widespread industry practice. "People all do that," Chen said. "It can lower the cost."
Quality bureau officials will remove Mai'erle's production certificate.
Earlier, the Shanghai Industrial and Commercial Administrative Bureau found that Tianshan Cinema and Cloud Nine Shopping Mall Cinema in Changning District and BroadBand International Cineplex in Luwan District were dishing up popcorn in buckets treated with the illegal chemicals.
