Caolu says goodbye to last of its pigs
THE swine are leaving town.
The last 70 animals from Shanghai’s largest pig farm, located in Caolu Town in the Pudong New Area, have been transported elsewhere — along with the farm itself — to outside the city’s limits.
The move is part of the district’s efforts to clear out livestock farms to improve the environment.
The Caolu farm housed more than 60,000 pigs last year and it is the last livestock farm to be cleared in the town.
Officials with Pudong’s agriculture commission said moving the pigs would not affect pork prices in the city.
A total of 1,619 dairy cattle, 70,315 pigs and 25,600 poultry have already been moved out of the town, officials said.
