Cash settlement for family of Nigerian killed in bar fight

A NIGERIAN man has withdrawn a lawsuit against a city bar seeking compensation for the death of his brother who was killed by a security guard in 2009.

The two parties agreed on an out-of-court settlement, according to Jing'an District People's Court.

Until the issue was resolved, the man, who identified himself as Shuaibu, had been unable to take the body of his younger brother, Abdulmalik Shuaibu, back to Nigeria.

"I feel tired of all the lingering issues," said Shuaibu. "It's time to take my little brother home."

Shuaibu has been staying in Shanghai for more than a year dealing with his brother's death.

The compensation, about 300,000 yuan (US$45,680) in total, is expected to be paid by next week, said Zhang Haijun, Shuaibu's lawyer.

Shuaibu said he would now have his brother's body cremated and take his ashes back to their hometown.

Abdulmalik Shuaibu died following an altercation with security guard Yuan Gaofeng outside Manhattan Bar, at the time on Tongren Road, on June 12, 2009.

The guard was sentenced 10 years in prison and ordered to pay 200,000 yuan compensation by the court.

According to the settlement, the bar will pay another 100,000 yuan to the victim. Shuaibu had asked for more than 1.15 million yuan.
