Caught on spy-cam: guard is arrested
A security guard at a luxury apartment complex in downtown Shanghai has been arrested for allegedly stealing 150,000 yuan (US$22,000) worth of luxury accessories — including watches and handbags — from residents, police said yesterday.
Police said the man, surnamed Tang, was captured last week stealing a Rolex watch by a surveillance camera a resident installed in his apartment after a Cartier watch went missing from his home last month.
The resident, a man surnamed Yang, had told police he trusted the security measures at the property so much that he always left his key in the shoe box outside the door of his apartment for his cleaning lady.
Yang installed the camera after reporting the first theft to the police, who advised him to take the measure since they had found no clues.
Police said the suspect also confessed he had stolen a Louis Vuitton handbag and a Cartier wallet from the apartment of a woman surnamed Xu who had left the key to her apartment with the building’s security guards for her cleaning lady when she was away travelling with family.
Police said the suspect had sold all of the stolen goods except the wallet.
The apartment complex is in the Longhua area of Xuhui District, but police declined to reveal its name.
Meanwhile, in Malu town of Jiading District, a man has been arrested for stealing about 10,000 yuan in cash and goods from 18 cars parked on the roadside overnight on October 9 by smashing the car windows, police said yesterday.
