Chance to see how key labs operate
KEY science laboratories and research centers in downtown Xuhui District will open to public free of charge over the weekend.
The 37 science labs — some of them being opened to public for the first time — include those handling neuroscience, cancer genes, new medicines and lasers.
“The opening of these institutes aims to popularize science and technology to the public and help achieve the city’s ambition to become a science and innovation center with global influence,” said Shou Ziqi, director of the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission.
The public, and children are especially welcome, can make experiments and study various scientific knowledge from the key science institutes, according to the Xuhui government.
Scientists will explain as simply as possible how their labs operate and what they have achieved, said Yao Ling, a researcher with the State Key Laboratory of Oncogenes & Related Genes under the Shanghai Cancer Institute.
The institute studies how tumor genes appear and grow, as well as innovative measures to prevent such processes.
