Charity events galore for needy people

The city is expected to overflow with love next month as the Shanghai Charity Foundation will carry out a series of charity events ahead of the New Year, officials said today.

Several charity auctions will be held next month, helping children of migrant workers and the needy people to have a happy New Year. Some Expo 2010 exhibits will be put under hammer.

A local hospital will offer a free operation for a child suffering from congenital heart disease early December. The child comes from a needy family in Kashi, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the foundation officials said.

On the New Year's Day, shopping malls in several commercial areas will donate part of their profit of the day to the foundation. With this activity, every shopper will be contribtuting to charity on the day, the officials said

On January 8, more than 10,000 volunteers will go to the street to collect donations from passer-bys. The raised fund will be used to provide each needy family in Shanghai with 500 yuan (US$75) in cash before the Spring Festival, they said.
