Cheap fox meat led to illegal business
A member of the gang detained for allegedly processing and selling fake mutton said fox meat was chosen because it was cheap and had similar taste, CCTV reported.
"We run family-style workshops. We have no other jobs. All we think about is how to earn more money," the man surnamed Wei told the broadcaster. Most of the fox meat was traced to Shandong Province because there were many fox breeders. They only had value for their furs and sold the fox meat at low prices.
Wei said the meat tasted like mutton so it did not need a variety of additives. It just needed to be boiled. He denied using rat meat in the mix.
Police investigating the case had not found any rat meat so far but some other suspects had claimed they used rats, the CCTV report said.
