Children’s program’s accounts concerns
THE Shanghai Charity Foundation has ordered a city -based children’s organization to rectify irregularities, after it was accused of serious accounting problems.
The foundation said it may stop financial support to a charity program involving the children of migrant workers carried out by the Sh1kg children’s charity if it fails to improve.
Sh1kg, an NGO approved in 2012 by the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau, works to improve schools in rural areas, helping children there to grow up healthy and happy, according to its website.
It has won several awards — such as one of the 10 most influential charity programs in Shanghai and the most innovative volunteer service program in the city.
All staff are volunteers and its management officials have their own jobs.
The organization raised 63,143 yuan (US$10,185) in 2012.
For 2014, donations and other support surpassed 600,000 yuan in the first three quarters.
Wang Xinnian, a volunteer accountant of the organization since 2012, tipped off the Shanghai Morning Post that financial management at Sh1kg was chaotic.
A large number of donations were not kept in the account, and it used various invoices to reimburse irrelevant items, Wang said.
Sh1kg head Li Dongxiang admitted problems but insisted that no money had gone into his pocket.
The results of the third-party auditing will be made public, according to Wang.
